Dr Gibson’s 3peaks training update, number 1.
Not even started yet!
Does anyone else struggle to get going with their training when they start something new? With all the dark nights and icy weather so far in January, I have found it difficult to get started… and then when I do think about getting going, it often seems like going out just for a bit is not going to make a dent in the preparation needed for a nearly marathon distance event…
I’ve trained for events before, and every time I start a new challenge, I often find myself getting overwhelmed with the thought of how much there is to do… for the 3peaks I am thinking how am I ever going to be able to do 24.5miles over 5,000ft of climbing without my legs giving up?
What is your why?
Before I start working on a plan and taking action, it helps to take some time to think about why I am doing it. Being in touch with my motivation keeps me going when things get difficult, for those times when I really don’t want to go out and train, for when my legs are tired and I want to stop.
Philosopher Frederich Nietzsche, and later Victor Frankl, both taught that if you know your why, you can manage any how – meaning that whatever you need to do, if you have a good enough reason, you can find a way to do whatever it is that you want to do.
For anyone who has taken on a new challenge this January, particularly if you are starting to find it hard to stick to, or indeed, like me if you haven’t really even got going yet… take a moment and think… what is your why? What inspired you to sign up to this challenge this year?
I’ll share my why in the next post …
